Born March 11th, 1959 in Berkley California comes Nina Hartley, a true Adult Industry Icon! 1. How are you today, what’cha wearing?

I'm fine. Just got in from errands so I'm in street clothes, though I'm usually naked when I'm at home.

I was interested in naked people as far back as grade school and knew I was bisexual by the time I was 14, and even knew the word for it. 4. Wikipedia describes you as American Pornographic Actress, Pornographic Film Director and Sex Educator, which are you most proud of? Why?

I'm most proud of my role as sex educator because it's the most helpful to the most number of people. It's all well and good to make fun movies, and I'm proud of them and all the fun and pleasure they've brought people over the years, but to help people with real issues is most gratifying. I want everyone to be as comfortable with their sexuality as I am with mine, and education is the way to do this. They all go together, of course, as a lot of my sex education has been by way of commercial video.

5. VHS or DVD, which is sexier?

I like VHS, as it's how I came up, but DVDs offer more per unit, in terms of behind the scenes footage, interviews, etc.

6. You have been in the biz for while, what is the key to longevity in the adult industry?

Know why you're here. Make a plan for after. Actually really BE INTO THE SEX for its own sake, as not all days at work are actually fun. HAVE A PRIVATE LIFE that's just for you: no money, no cameras, just for fun and love. Have a money plan. Pay your taxes. Take a freaking vacation. Actually like being an entertainer, since that's what we do.

7. Pornographic Parody or Straight Sex Videos... which do you, prefer?

I like both, as I'm a bit of a comedienne and enjoy being silly, since porn is a silly medium. But I like doing straight video IF the script is not too stupid.

8. What do you like about making Adult Films?

Having sex with lots of interesting and fun people without having to date them. Performing sex acts for the entertainment and arousal of those at home. Showcasing a woman having a good time with sex and no bad after-effects. 9. Easier to be an Adult Star back in the 80’s and 90’s than today?

Yes and no. The business was smaller then and we were closer. But today we have the AIM clinic and health care is better. The business was stronger then because there was no competition and now Internet piracy is killing the business. Since 1988 it's been legal in California to shoot porn, so there's no more harassment from the law. But now we're under scrutiny by Cal OSHA, which sucks. I guess, from a financial standpoint, it was easier in the '80s and '90's, as the money was still good then.

10. Advice for young folks, both Men and Women, thinking of being an Adult Star?

Seriously think of doing something else with your life and commit to having the best off-camera sex life you can. Porn: easier in than out. I'm a lifer but it's not a good choice for most people. It looks much more glamorous than it is, and entertainment is a very harsh mistress. Business is down and competition is up. It's hard for a guy to even get a shot and it's very hard on people. It's hard to have a relationship and be in porn, no matter how much you love each other in the beginning. If you're not super gorgeous or super handsome, the business is even less nice to you. And, as much as we test, STD’s are a fact of life here and they're no fun.

Really, find something else to do and be sexy in private. Become a swinger, or a dancer, anything that doesn't leave a PERMANENT record of you fucking someone.
